Transporting Your Vehicles when Moving a Long Distance or Overseas
Moving your belongings is one thing, but moving a
vehicle is another. If you move to a new home within driving
distance, you can probably just drive your vehicles to the new
location. You can even attach a boat, RV, motorcycle, etc. while
driving in some instances. However, if you're moving a great distance
away or overseas, taking your vehicles along will not be that simple.
Contact the Moving Company
A professional moving company will usually have all the answers for
your needs, including moving your vehicles. Make sure you choose
a mover who is knowledgeable in the type of move you are
planning. If moving from the East coast to the West coast, make
sure your mover has experience doing this. If moving overseas,
find a mover who is an expert in moving internationally. The
mover should also know how to move your vehicles safely.
Various types of vehicles need special care during the moving
process. For example, a boat will require special equipment to
lift it up onto the trailer. Also, carrying a vehicle with you to
a foreign land will often require much paperwork, fees, and a knowledge
of restrictions or regulations within that country. An expert
mover in this field should be familiar with all these requirements and
be able to get your vehicle there without harm!
If having your car delivered by the moving company within your own
country, you might find that they will not guarantee an exact delivery
date, but an estimate only. So, be prepared to get a rental car
if needed. Also, if you're moving to a residential area, the
mover might have difficulty driving the large delivery truck to your
home. Instead, he might ask that you pick up your vehicle
elsewhere in town. These factors all depend on whom you choose as
your mover and where your new home is located.
Prepare your Vehicles
Before moving day, there are some ways you can prepare your vehicle for
a safe trip. First, be sure to empty the vehicle of any personal
possessions. For RVs or mobile homes, secure all loose
ends. Check the vehicle for plenty of antifreeze if the
temperatures are going to be very cold where you are traveling.
Also, make sure the battery is secure. If the vehicle will be
transported by trailer or overseas, empty most of the fuel
beforehand. Turn off the vehicle alarm systems and remove any
outer cosmetics that could be damaged during the trip such as spoilers,
special antennas, etc.
If shipping overseas, send with your vehicle several copies of your
title and the original title along with notarized letters from any lien
holders of the car.
Insurance Coverage for your
Vehicle
Check with your auto insurance company to find out if your vehicle will
be covered during the move, especially if you are traveling
overseas. The movers may also provide moving insurance coverage,
so check with them as well. Photograph your vehicle from many
angles if possible before leaving. The mover will probably
inspect the vehicle for any damage before leaving also, so be sure it's
sparkling clean before this inspection.
As with any trip, accidents can occur. Finding a trustworthy
mover for your vehicles and taking the steps above will help ease your
mind for the big moving day.
